BIOTIC CONDITIONS

Breeding conditions:
|
| Arctic Foxes bred, and actively predated clutches of waders and other birds (>90% of duck nests were destroyed). Only a few Long-tailed and Arctic Skuas bred, and non-breeding Long-tailed Skuas remained the whole summer in large flocks, especially in coastal tundras. Very low breeding success (~10%) in long-tailed ducks and King Eiders. Hatching success: 100% white-fronted geese, 54% emperor geese, 66% black brant. Breeding populations of waders (Dunlin, Temmincks Stint, Red-necked Phalarope) were small due to large predation pressure from Arctic Foxes. As a result, only single broods of waders were recorded in July. |
